Novi Vinodolski

At the end of the Vinodol valley, about forty-six kilometres south-east from the biggest Croatian port Rijeka, there is a mediterranean town of Novi Vinodolski, with its town centre and the suburbs: Povile, Klenovica, Smokvica, Sibinj, Zagori, Ledenice and Krmpote. The town had probably grown from the old Roman town buildings Lopar, and it has developed as a town very fast presumably because of the fact that in 1228 it already had its own law called the Vinodol Law. It is the first croatian law made for peasants and it was written in croatian glagolitic script.

It should be said that Ivan Mažuranić (1814-1890), one of the most famous croatian poets, who wrote „The death of Smail-aga Čengić“, was born in Novi Vinodolski, and was also one of the leaders who created the modern state of Croatia.

Novi Vinodolski has proven its worth by remaining strong and stable even after so many wars and battles that were fought throughout the centuries. It was attacked by Mlets, Turks, Hapsburgs, and Hungarians, but it has always kept the croatian tradition, and above all, it kept a strong patriotism.

Novi Vinodolski has brought up many great and famous politicians, scientists, artists, and poets. It has many monuments including religious ones, and it holds a high place in the field of art and architecture.

It has rich folk tradition. Carnivals and many other folk celebrations are still held, and we have traditional folk dances, during which, women wear beautiful traditional folk dresses.

Novi vinodolski has 4000 citizens, who are well-known for their hospitality and kindness, and are very open-minded people. They have always been in close contact with foreign people, and their hospitality towards tourists has long roots in the past. Because of its fascinating natural beauty, Novi Vinodolski is a mediterranean town on the Croatian coast well-known to many tourists throughout Europe.
